A wisdom tooth with a strong root.
This impacted wisdom tooth caused lots of pain, inflammation and infection of the gums around it (pericoronitis). Extraction is the only option. But it was not an easy one. From the removed tooth, we can see the curved root with a big lump at the end. This abnormal anatomy created a lot of resistance during the operation. With care and patience, the tooth eventually was removed without damaging any adjacent nerves (mandible and lingual nerves). #wisdomtooth

Dental implant rescue - broken abutment screw retrieval.

Dental implant fracture can be implant itself, supported crown or abutment screw. The most common fractured part is the abutment screw. It would be a nightmare if the broken screw couldn't be removed safely without damaging the implant. That means the implant has to be redone. This implant abutment screw b

Crowns for teeth grinding
Most people probably may have some experiences of teeth grinding and clenching from time to time. Grinding teeth (Bruxism) occasionally may not cause any damage of teeth. But if it's on a regular basis, it may rise some issues such as wearing teeth down, chipping, fracturing, loosening or loss of teeth. It also can affect jaws, cause or worsen TMD/TMJ (Joint's problem). Most of teeth grinding happens during sleep and the causes could be abnormal bite, missing or crooked teet

Wisdom teeth extraction - Is it a wise decision?
Wisdom teeth extraction was requested by patient's orthodontist. The two lower wisdom teeth were fully impacted and couldn't be seen in the mouth. Surgical extraction procedure was performed and fully closure of extraction sites was achieved. The surgery was uneventful. However is it necessary? Were the wisdom teeth really pushing other lower teeth forward? Were they causing front teeth crowding? Would they compromise orthodontic (braces) result? Researches suggested remo

Amalgam foreign body removed in jaw bone.
This x-ray showed something unexpected when we were planning dental implants . An amalgam foreign body was detected on 3D cone-beam CT. Most foreign bodies are embedded in the soft and hard tissue of oral cavity either by trauma or a dentist iatrogenically. Amalgam is the most common embedded material. Even though some scientists and the public claim amalgam causes health issues, there is no scientific clinical study has established a link between dental amalgam and health p

As rare as a hen's tooth!
As a dentist, I see abnormal tooth structure or anatomy sometimes. Most of them are not often to be seen and very few are rare cases. But this one is extremely rare, like a hen's tooth. From the first picture, we can see the tooth had two dental abscesses. Obviously the tooth's nerve got infection, which can be seen on the x-ray clearly. Also we can see something abnormal on the x-ray - the tooth got an extra root! After successfully completing the root canal treatment , we

Direct Veneers - Composite Veneers
Gaps between teeth? Bad shapes of teeth? Short teeth? Veneers can be the solution for most cases. Veneers can be direct veneers ( composite veneers ) or indirect veneers ( porcelain veneers ). Composite veneers are much more affordable than porcelain veneers. Although they don't have the strength of porcelain and may be discoloured a few years later, they can achieve a very good cosmetic result like this case. Just in case that some people may be curious about what's happe

I'LL BE BACK! - Do Not Ignore Tooth Decay.
This patient came in for an emergency dental treatment with a very bad toothache. He couldn't sleep much because of the severe pain. On our records, we found one of his top left teeth got a decay 18 months ago but he didn't come back to have the filling done. Unfortunately today's x-ray showed the decay had progressed and touched the nerve. The only way to save the tooth was root canal treatment . Pulp extirpation (removal of the nerve) was performed as an endodontic emergen

Porcelain Crown
Porcelain crowns are normally used to restore front teeth to achieve a balanced result of function and aesthetics. In this case, the top anterior tooth had root canal treatment due to infection of the nerve. The tooth was restored with a post and composite resin afterwards. A porcelain crown (Zirconia in this case) ensured a long term success functionally and cosmetically. #veneerscrownsandbridges
