Gingivitis is a mild, reversible form of gum disease caused by the buildup of plaque and bacteria along the gumline. It commonly causes red, swollen, and bleeding gums, especially during brushing or flossing.

Common symptoms of gingivitis include:

  • Red or dark red gums instead of healthy pink gums

  • Swollen or puffy gums

  • Bleeding gums, especially when brushing or flossing

  • Tender or sensitive gums

  • Bad breath (halitosis) that persists

  • Soft gums that may feel sore when touched

  • Receding gums (in some cases, making teeth appear longer)

In its early stages, gingivitis may cause no pain, so many people don't realize they have it. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a more serious gum disease that can damage the tissues and bone supporting the teeth and may eventually lead to tooth loss.

Fortunately, with good oral hygiene and professional dental cleaning, gingivitis can usually be reversed before it progresses to more serious gum disease.

This case demonstrates the treatment and successful recovery of a patient with typical gingivitis. Following a professional scale and clean, the patient's red, swollen, and bleeding gums returned to a healthy pink appearance. However, gingival recession could be irreversible, even after successful treatment of the inflammation.

The key to preventing gingivitis is maintaining good oral hygiene through regular brushing, flossing, and routine dental check-ups with high quality professional scale and clean.
