Mouthguards in Mentone and Bayside Area, Melbourne

Mouthguards

Every year there are thousands of dental injuries as a result of playing sports without a custom-made mouthguard. Quite often these injuries could have been significantly reduced or completely eliminated, saving you time and money in the dental chair. The cost of restoring teeth can mount up over a lifetime and a mouthguard can be an economical way to avoid the pain and distress of dental injuries.

The majority of sporting organisations currently require sports participants to wear a mouth guard to reduce the degree of force transmitted to the head, if traumatic contacts occur, to minimise potential injury risks to the teeth, face and jaws.

Why Should I Choose A Custom Mouthguard?

We know it is possible to buy over-the-counter mouthguards relatively cheaply but this can create a false economy. These mouthguards tend to be ill-fitting and uncomfortable to wear and can often hinder breathing. Even worse, in the event of an accident they offer only minimal protection. Our custom-made mouthguards are strong, comfortable and are taste and odour free so you will feel much more inclined to wear your mouthguard while playing sports. They also come in a large range of colours and designs, so if you like you can customise your mouthguard.

Benefits of a Custom Fitted Mouth Guard

  • considerably reduce the risks of injury to your upper front teeth;

  • reduce the risks of damage to your upper or lower back teeth, after a traumatic closure of your lower jaw (i.e. your opposing teeth will be protected from traumatic contacts against each other);

  • considerably reduce your risk of mouth and lip lacerations;

  • reduce the risk of damage to your tongue at impact;

  • reduce the risk of fractures of your lower jaw (body of the mandible) and of your mandibular condyles (sub-condylar fractures);

  • reduce the risk of damage to your TMJ (temporo-mandibular joint);

  • if worn over orthodontics, a mouth guard will reduce the risk of penetrating injuries to you, or other players, from the brackets and wiring in your orthodontic treatment.

How Long Will It Take For My Mouthguard To Be Made?

We can make your custom-made mouthguard quite quickly without the need for lengthy dental appointments or dental injections. During your initial appointment, we will take a detailed impression of your mouth to make your new mouthguard. Every mouthguard is individually designed and is thickened to provide greater protection in critical areas while still being comfortable to wear. The fit of your mouthguard will be checked at your next visit and then it will be ready for you to wear.

Looking after your mouthguard.

Custom fit mouthguards will only be able to protect your teeth if they are looked after correctly. To maintain the longevity of your mouthguard it is important to rinse with cold water after each wear and occasionally softly brush it with your toothbrush (this will help remove any lingering germs). Do not wash it in hot water or leave it in the sun as this may change the shape of the mouthguard making it unusable. When not in use, keep your mouthguard in a hard, well ventilated container and do not leave it laying around, especially if you have a dog! We have had many patients who have had to come in to be refitted for a mouthguard as their dog thought that it was a nice chew toy.
