Amalgam foreign body removed in jaw bone.

Updated: Jul 22, 2020

This x-ray showed something unexpected when we were planning dental implants. An amalgam foreign body was detected on 3D cone-beam CT.

Most foreign bodies are embedded in the soft and hard tissue of oral cavity either by trauma or a dentist iatrogenically. Amalgam is the most common embedded material. Even though some scientists and the public claim amalgam causes health issues, there is no scientific clinical study has established a link between dental amalgam and health problems.

However, in this case the amalgam was in the way of placing a dental implant. Removal of it had to be done! During the operation, the whole embedded amalgam and inflamed soft tissue was removed successfully.
