What is orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontic treatment is the process of straightening and aligning teeth, primarily using braces to slowly guide growth and movement. However, orthodontic treatment can also refer to using a removable plate or clear plastic moulds to move and maintain a move favourable dental alignment.

Why should I have orthodontic treatment?

There are many reasons someone might need braces. Many people have naturally crooked, crowded or misaligned teeth. Helping realign them using braces can help with the overall appearance of someone’s smile, while also ensuring that there’s an even distribution of biting pressure along your teeth, which can maintain jaw and gum health and minimize pain in the long-term. Crowded teeth can also make it difficult to properly brush them, helping maintain dental hygiene.

These are just some of many common teeth misalignment issues that orthodontic treatment can help remedy with braces. Brighton, Cheltenham, Sandringham and Mordialloc are just some of many bayside suburbs which rely on Rien Dental for ongoing and long-term orthodontic care.

What are common problems orthodontics can help fix?

Many people can suffer from upper front teeth which stick out at an unnatural angle, both affecting the appearance of the person’s smile and exposing those teeth to a greater risk of damage. Others can have misaligned upper and lower jaws, leading to an overbite or underbite which can significantly impact the appearance of someone’s smile and their ability to chew efficiently. This can add strain to jaw muscles, causing fatigue and muscle pain.

When should I have orthodontic treatment?

With orthodontic care, it’s better to start as early as possible while your teeth and jaw are still growing – this is the reason many people first get braces in their teenage years. However, it’s never too late or too early to reap the benefits of orthodontics. Cheltenham, Brighton and Beaumaris residents of any age can call us up now to discuss if they think braces might be for them.

Invisible aligners

What are the kinds of orthodontic treatments available?

The most common and widely effective form of orthodontics available is metal braces. With these, each tooth is set and connected along a moulded wire, gently moving the teeth into a shared alignment.

Invisible braces

However, an increasingly popular form of orthodontics are invisible aligners, which are plastic moulds that gently guide teeth into a favourable alignment. A number of moulds are made for each patient, each one adjusted and swapped out every two weeks to maintain slow but continual change. Transparent and low-impact, invisible aligners are a great option for people who don’t like the appearance of ordinary orthodontics.
