What are dental implants?

If you’re looking for a safer, more understated alternative to obvious dentures, bridgework or traditional crowns, dental implants could be for you. The treatment is a step-by-step process, involving a number of appointments across an average of 6 months’ time.

Designed to resemble natural teeth in look and feel, they’re an option that offers a sense of comfort and security. Increasingly, people with dental issues like missing teeth or exposed nerves are opting for a dental implant.

How do they work?

Dental implants are, in essence, small bolts of titanium inserted directly into the jawbone – to take the place of a damaged, broken or missing tooth root. Once the jawbone has healed over and incorporated the implant into its structure (through a process called osseointegration) the bolt can then be used as an anchor for a “replacement tooth”.

These “replacement teeth”, designed to be as much like real teeth as possible, offer a permanent and fixed solution – unlike dentures, which can often move around along the jaw and irritate gums when used.  They look, feel and perform so much like regular teeth you can forget you’re even using a dental implant!

How are dental implants fitted?

The staff at Rien Dental are professionally trained in computer-guided implant surgery. A precise solution, guided implant surgery uses a 3D CT scan of your jaw and a 3D printed template to help accurately implant the replacement tooth.

Whether it’s complete arch replacement or simply a single tooth fitting, the cutting-edge equipment at Rien Dental helps create the best outcomes for your smile.

What are the applications and benefits to a dental implant?

There are a number of reasons why dental implants are suggested to patients, along with a number of advantages over more old-school remedies.

A fixed solution to missing teeth: We’re all familiar with dentures as a solution to missing teeth – but they also come with their own issues. Even if perfect fitting dentures are found, gum irritation and exposed nerve pain can become problems from having a removable, non-fixed application in your teeth. A fixed solution like dental implants bypasses all of these common issues, along with some of the embarrassment that can come with denture use.

Ensure long-term health of your remaining teeth: Some applications, like bridgework, require grinding down healthy teeth to fit a replacement – which can impact those teeth’s strength in the long-term. With dental implants, the only major work occurs at the site of the missing tooth and doesn’t impact neighbouring teeth.
